There were nine fixtures in the Northern League Division Two this weekend and with top of the table Ryhope CW not having a fixture it meant second placed Northallerton Town could close the gap.
However Washington pulled off an upset and managed to beat Town in a thrilling 4-3 encounter. In truth the game could have gone either way but the mid-table team just edged the game. A two goal cameo from Michael Latimer and a goal apiece from Chris Tate and Daniel Young wrapped up all three points for the away side.
Town found the net through Wayne Gredziak, Adam Emson and Carl Chillingsworth but it wasn’t enough to capitalise on Ryhope not having a game.
Brandon United had a visit from promotion chasing Whitehaven but were beaten 4-1. A superb hat-trick from Mattie Tymon and a late goal from Greg Quantrill gave the away side the spoils.
Glen Hendricks’ goal for Brandon was a mere consolation meaning they haven’t won for four games and only drawn once in that time. Whitehaven on the other hand are in good form and are unbeaten in five games, the highlight being the 15-0 hammering of Parton United in the Cumberland Senior Cup.
Chester-Le-Street were the biggest winners this weekend pulling off a brilliant 6-1 home win over Esh Winning.
Two goals from Mark Patterson and a goal each for Michael Robson, Lewis Lynch, Michael Hepplewhite and Reece Weir guaranteed the win.
Darlington RA took full advantage of Northallerton Town’s defeat by beating Ryton & Crawcrook Albion 1-0. The side, now 18th in the table, put up a brave fight but a Jimmy Muir goal deep in injury time gifted all three points to Darlington RA.
Lowly Horden CW made it seven games without a win as they were beaten at home 3-1 to Whickham. Horden’s only goal came from Lee Bishop after he rounded the Whickham keeper but goals from Jordan Larty, Joseph Dankworth and Sam McIntosh made sure of the Whickham win.
Jarrow Roofing pulled off a resounding 5-1 home win over West Allotment Celtic meaning Jarrow have won the last two games and are unbeaten in four.
The away side had taken the lead through Shaun Reid but the home side responded through Daniel Smart (2), Darren Palmer (2) and Daniel Carson.
North Shields beat Birtley Town 1-0, the only goal of the game coming from Michael McKeown. Birtley haven’t won a game since beating Alnwick 1-0 at the beginning of last month. A contrast of form sees North Shields win their third consecutive game in the league.
Thornaby and Tow Law Town played out a dire 0-0 draw meaning Thornaby are ten games without a win.
The final fixture of the weekend was a true relegation six pointer in every sense of the word as bottom of the table Alnwick Town travelled to the team above them in the league, Stokesley Sports Club.
However the game was a one sided affair and Stokesley’s 4-0 win was their first home win of the season. A Ross Hodgon hat-trick and a single goal from Gary Redman won the game for the home side.
